How Can I to kill Bamboo?

I have some Bamboo in my backyard that is up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Most of it is much smaller smaller. I want to get rid of it and kill the roots also, so it doesn't grow back. I was figuring on cutting the Bamboo off a couple of inches above ground and then spraying the stubs above ground. I believe this would work. Any suggestions as to what I could use though?
